Business Day
Learning Objective: To identify and understand the types of businesses in Springfield, have an understanding of the challenges faced by businesses in our economic region, and have knowledge of future labor market trends.
Possible areas to explore:
Workplace issues, including sexual harassment and dress codes Business ethics Economic impact of small business on our community Success stories of businesses and business leadership Media and advertising Issues facing both small and large business owners Networking Promoting a business or organization in this community Sustainability initiatives - including clean technologies and public and private partnerships
The success of planning the Program Day depends on BALANCE. Balance between the Learning Objectives as well as Current Affairs. Balance between lecture/discussion, and hands on learning.
At the end of the program day, participants should have an understanding of, and be able to answer the following questions. How the information is presented and which individuals are involved in the presentations are up to the creativity of the planning team.
Business
1. What types of businesses exist in Springfield? How do they interface? What resources or organizations promote business in Springfield (i.e. Springfield Area Chamber of Commerce)?
2. What are the major issues that companies must face in today's work environment?
3. What makes a business succeed beyond its competitors?
4. What can you do to prepare yourself to succeed in business?
5. Communication and etiquette in the business world (i.e., social networking, etc.)
Current Affairs
Are there items of current interest that have not been addressed in the Learning Objective? Identify any current affairs and include them in program day planning.
Education and Lifelong Learning
Learning Objective: To achieve an understanding of the educational opportunities available to students of all ages in this community, how one would finance education when entering college, and what the current trends are in higher education. Possible Areas to Explore:
Springfield Public and Private Colleges and Universities Vocational Education Financial Aid Non-Credit and Recreational Opportunities for learning Education available outside of public schools How to choose a college What is the Springfield community doing to increase and maintain educational achievement in both public and private schools? Access to educational opportunities for all

Government/Law and History of Springfield
Learning Objective: To understand the city and county government, law enforcement and the relationship between these entities, and how the history of the city impacts life in the present.

Springfield, State and Federal courts Structure of City of Springfield, City Council & County Commission Springfield Police and Greene County Sheriff relationship How our legal system functions Law enforcement’s beginnings in Springfield How was Springfield developed and where is our city going today? What is our government and community doing to maintain and enhance the safety and security of our community? The success of planning the Program Day depends on BALANCE. 5. How does our legal system function? What are the various jurisdictions and how are cases handled? What challenges do they currently face?
History of Springfield
1. What significant developments have happened in the past, and what significant developments are planned for the future of Springfield?
2. What are some major milestones in the development of Springfield and how do they impact our lives today? Current Affairs

Life 101
Learning Objective: To understand the issues that make your life better and your community better.

Time management/balance in life Financial management/planning Health issues - stress management, alternative medicine Interview/job skills New technology Community involvement and volunteerism Recreation opportunities in Springfield Etiquette What does Springfield do to ensure there is access to health and wellness resources for all citizens? What opportunities exist for citizens of this community to access the arts and other cultural experiences?
